Create a tournament
Set up a tournament step by step: name and date, format and races, entrants and check-in, and tables. Then find each setting again in Setup.
The names and results shown are made up (the Maple Street Pool League is a demo organization).
Here the Maple Street Pool League sets up the Maple Street Fall Cup, a double-elimination 8-ball event. The wizard walks you through it one step at a time. Nothing is created until you finish, so you can look around without worrying.
Start the wizard
- Open Tournaments from the menu.
- Under Create a tournament, choose Set up step by step (wizard).
- Work through the steps: Name and date, Format, Entrants and Tables. Use Next and Back to move between them.
You can stop at any time with Save and close. Your unfinished setup is kept for your account for 30 days. It shows under Your unfinished setups, where you can pick it up again or discard it.
If you'd rather set things up on the tournament's own page, type a name under Tournament name on the Tournaments page and choose Create tournament instead.
Name and date
- Tournament name: up to 80 characters. It can't be the same as another league or tournament in your organization.
- Date, Start time and Time zone.
- List it in Find leagues & tournaments: ticked at first. Anyone can then find the tournament and open its public page, which shows the venue, the date, the entrants' short names (like "Ann A.") and the results. Enter the City and State, or untick it to keep the tournament private.
Format and races
- Format: Single elimination, Double elimination, Round robin, Chip tournament or Redraw knockout.
- Entry type: Singles, Doubles, Scotch doubles or Teams. For teams, choose whether Team matches scored by (teams only) is a race or team points.
- Game: 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball or other.
- Race, winners side, Race, losers side (double elimination) and Race, final: whole numbers from 1 to 25. A round robin uses the winners-side race for every match.
- Seeding: Random, By rating (highest first) or Manual (the order you list the entrants in).
- True double elimination: when ticked, a reset final is played if the losers-side player wins the final.
For a chip tournament, set the starting chips. For a redraw knockout, set how many losses a player is allowed (1 or 2). Chip and redraw events are seeded at random or in your order, not by rating. See Run a chip tournament for more.
Want groups? Groups aren't a format of their own. Add everyone to one tournament, then split them into round-robin groups from the Entrants step. See Run groups, then a playoff.
Entrants and check-in
- Add a row for each entrant: a name, and a rating if you know one. You can also paste a list. You can skip this and add entrants later.
- Most entrants: the capacity. Free tournaments have up to 16 entrants; the Organizer subscription allows more. A round robin has at most 32.
- Check-in required before the draw: when ticked, only entrants who are checked in go into the draw.
Add entrants and check them in explains ratings, guests and check-in in detail.
Tables
Tables let LeagueOrbit send matches to the right place. This step is optional.
- If you have a venue saved, choose it under Venue and its open tables are copied.
- Or enter the Number of tables (up to 40) and a Size: 7 ft, 8 ft or 9 ft. For a room with different tables, choose Mixed sizes and enter how many of each.
Finish
- Look over the summary of every step. Use the change button next to a step to go back to it.
- Choose Finish and create.
- When it's done, choose Open the tournament to check entrants in and make the draw.
If something stops partway, nothing is undone. Fix the problem and choose Continue; the parts already made are skipped.
Change settings later in Setup
Every setting lives on the tournament's Setup step afterwards. Open the tournament and choose Setup:
- Date, Start time, Time zone, Entry type, Game, Format, the races, Seeding and Most entrants.
- Check-in required before the draw.
- Players report their own scores: players in a match send the final score from the Scoreboard. When both send the same score it's recorded and the bracket moves on. If they differ, it waits for you. This setting isn't in the wizard, and it isn't available for team points. See Report your tournament score for the player's side.
- Handicap: tick Lower-rated players race to fewer games, then set Rating points per game and Most games taken off. It works with race formats only.
- The tournament's name, under Tournament name, with Save name.
Choose Save setup after a change. Below the settings you'll find Venue and Tables, with Add a table and Save tables.
Once the draw is made, the format, races, seeding, entry type, team scoring, handicap and check-in are fixed. The date, time, capacity and players reporting their own scores can still change.
Entry fees
There is no entry fee setting. To keep track of who paid, open Money under Extras and use Record entry fees: enter the Fee per entrant ($), tick each entrant under Who paid, and choose Record entry fees. LeagueOrbit doesn't take payments itself.
Copy a past tournament
On the Tournaments page, choose Copy next to a tournament. Give it a New tournament name and an optional date, then choose Copy tournament. The format, races, seeding, capacity, tables, venue and registration settings are copied, and registration starts closed. Entrants, draws and results are never copied.
