Run groups, then a playoff
Play groups as round robins, then send the top finishers to a playoff bracket, seeded so group winners meet late.
The names and results shown are made up (the Maple Street Pool League is a demo organization).
A big field plays better in stages. Players are split into groups, and each group plays a round robin, so everyone gets several matches. Then the top finishers go to a playoff bracket. In LeagueOrbit each group is its own tournament, and the playoff is a tournament made from the groups' results.
1. Set up the groups
- On Tournaments, make one tournament per group, for example "Fall Open Group A" and "Fall Open Group B". The wizard is quickest. Choose Round robin as the format.
- Add each group's entrants, make the draw and play the matches as usual.
The groups need the same entry type: all singles, all doubles, all Scotch or all teams.
2. Make the playoff
When a group has a champion, its page says it is finished and offers Make a playoff from this.
- Choose Make a playoff from this on any finished group. A new tournament, "Fall Open Playoff", opens on its Entrants step.
- Under Add from your leagues and player list, Playoff: top finishers of finished tournaments is already chosen, with this group ticked. Tick the other groups, in the order you want them.
- Set How many from each: 2 sends each group's winner and runner-up.
- Choose Show the list. The qualifiers are listed in seed order: every group's winner, then every runner-up.
- Choose Add. The playoff's seeding is set to Manual (the entrant order), so that order is kept.
3. Play the playoff
Make the draw on the Bracket step as usual. With manual seeding, seeds 1 and 2 (two group winners) sit in opposite halves and can only meet in the final. A group's winner plays another group's runner-up in the first round.
Good to know
- Only finished groups can be used, so finish every group before you add its qualifiers.
- A group with fewer finishers than you asked for sends everyone it has.
- You can still add, remove or reorder playoff entrants before the draw.
